Black and White

Just Like the Old Movies

ree

A principle of design I used is contrast. The way the sharp angles of the shadows go against the softer features of the subjects face creates a dramatic look. An element of art I used is space. The lack of space left over in the photo not only brings the subject more attention but because of the close angle brings more detail to the subject herself. A rule of photography applied to this photo is simplify the scene, the background is nothing but black even blending in with the subjects hair and the shadows on her face. This adds a level of beautiful simplicity to the photo.

Beware of the Haunted Mansion

The principle of design I noticed while taking this photo is pattern and repetition. The repeated shape of the bars and candles that line it alongside the identical wreaths creates a unique repeated pattern. An element of art I used is lines. The angles of all the candles and fencing direct the viewers eye all around the photo. A rule of photography in this photo is use diagonals as the angle of the frame is tilted adding a sense of uncertainty and movement.

Finding Beauty in the Normalized

The principle of design for this photo is also pattern and repetition, the repeated square and rectangle shapes that make up the pillar, even the leaves that are spread out around it are of a consistent shape. An element of art in this photo is texture, the texture difference from the metal fencing to the crunchy look of the leaves and rough cracked texture of the concrete adds depth and interest to the photo. A rule of photography in this photo is fill the frame. Because of how close the photo was taken it leaves less space for the viewers eye to wander beyond what was intended to be looked at.

Driving Past Melancholy Hill

A principle of design in this photo is movement as the moving of the car created an almost blurred look to the photo the movement of the grass against the movement of the car adds to the detail the viewer can look at. An element of art in this photo is also space as the amount of empty space in the photo leaves room for the scenery to shine. A rule of photography in this photo is avoid the middle, both of the trees that stand tall interrupting the background are on opposite sides of the frame creating a framing in the photo itself.

A Look Into The Garden

ree

A principle of design in this photo is emphasis. The change in shade of grey in the flowers to the leaves in the background to the flowers direct the eye to the subject. An element of art in this photo is texture, the sharp bumpy look of the leaves goes against the soft rounded petals of the flowers adding interest to the photo. A rule of photography in this photo is backgrounds. In this photo the amount of types of leaves and plants in the background give the eye something more to look at even when not looking at the direct subject.
